Literature for Young Adults
Chapter 1
Why do we share Literature with Kids?
Sharing literature with kids at an early age not only creates fun learning experiences for them but it can also helps developed a love for reading. Reading for pleasure at an early age can assist a child with language acquisition, language development and it aids children to respond to literature giving them an appreciation of their culture as well as other cultures. Youth reading provides a opportunity for children to deal with tough situations, help them better understand who they are and develop their imagination in so many creative ways.
Another reason why children should be reading at an early age is research shows that reading for at least twenty minutes a day can help boost standardized test scores up to ninety percent compared to those who read less than five minutes a day. It has shown to aid with vocabulary development and learn the meaning of thousands of words each year.
As an educator, knowing and understanding the benefits of book sharing to children at a young age not only is a win win for all but it plays a huge role in the development and success of the child throughout his or her school years and beyond.
Chapter 2
Division of Young People's Literature
What books are suitable for children? Careful consideration must be implemented in relation to what books students should be reading. Content needs to be age and developmentally appropriate for the level of the child. Once we get to know our students or our own children, we can make wise decisions about the type books they should be exposed to and ready to read. Reading the book beforehand is the most effective way to select proper literature content for young children
After reading this chapter, I realized the importance of taking time to research books prior to exposing children to the content level of the text. Thinking back to this chapter, I finally understood the distinction between both the middle grade level and middle school level books. These two types of books have a huge gap in the content it presents to its reader.
Chapter 3
Anatomy of A Book
Understanding the anatomy of a book is a huge deal for publishers. Before a book is sent to print, there are many factors a printing company must consider prior to sending a book for sale. Front matter, body matter, end matter are some of the great deal of items covered to have a book presentable and attractive. This is a must for a successful book selling. Librarians must be familiar with the terms and sections of a book in order to teach it to their patrons.
As I give thought to the importance of the anatomy of a book, I understand clearly the significant role the media specialist must play in the library setting. Teaching students about the different types of books available in the library is as important as learning about how the thought process of putting a book together before it goes to stores and school libraries.
Chapter 4
Genres and Formats
Why students should know the difference to genres and formats of a book? According to the video, a genre is divided into two categories which are fiction and nonfiction text. Fictional stories have different types of subcategories such as realism and fantasy whereas nonfiction text deals with informational text such biographies, autobiographies, memoir and narrative and expository. Format is the type of book the reader is reading such drama, short stories, graphic novels, picture books etc. As a media specialist, knowing the difference between genre and format and knowing how to genre-fying books in the library is an important process that must be examined when placing books in the correct area in the library. Using the correct language when teaching genres and formats to students not only makes it easier for them to understand their meaning but it also makes it helpful to find books with the genre and format a student wants to read.
As I reflect on this chapter, I can honestly say that I have learned a lot more than what I thought I knew about genres and formats. I believe this is a great topic to teach in the classroom. Students need to be familiar with the text they are reading as well as the text they want to read.
Chapter 5
What is Young Adult Literature?
Young Adult Literature books play an important role in the life of young adult readers. This type of literature focuses on issues and challenges that are similar to those of young adults. Reading these types of books can be great support for readers as they too find similar issues as the main character. Just like the protagonist who deals with issues and conflicts in the story and tries to find a solution or learn from his or her own experiences, readers can find ways to deal with the situation they too find themselves in just like the character in the story.
I think it is important to let students know that they are in charge of choosing books they are interesting in. Most students will read books that resemble them or want to know how characters deal with a certain situation or issue they too are facing. These types of books help students reflect on life and character building issues.
